CapCut vs DaVinci Resolve: which editor wins?

CapCut and DaVinci Resolve are both free, but they sit at opposite ends of editing. CapCut is light, fast and social-first: auto-captions, trending sounds and templates for a phone-shot clip. DaVinci Resolve is a free professional finishing suite with best-in-class colour, full audio and VFX, at the cost of a steep curve and a capable GPU. Neither generates footage, and neither runs in a browser.

Or neither: when a browser AI editor is the right call

CapCut and DaVinci Resolve both assume you already have the footage: one for a quick social cut, the other for a professional finish. If the shots do not exist yet, or you want to work from any browser without installing a heavy app, that is a different job.

Morphic is one workspace that takes a brief to a finished film. An agentic Copilot storyboards the idea and generates the shots across frontier image, video and audio models. Compose, a real multi-track editor in the same tab, cuts and grades them, adds generated voiceover, music and effects, and exports up to 4K, with a team editing the same Canvas live. It will not replace CapCut for a fast phone-shot social cut or DaVinci Resolve for a feature-grade colour pass, but for making a video end to end, without an install or a GPU, it does the whole job in one place.

FAQs

Is CapCut free?
Yes. CapCut's free tier covers templated editing, auto-captions and basic effects, though some exports carry a watermark and cap at 1080p. The $19.99 per month Pro plan removes those limits and adds more templates, effects and premium assets. Checked on capcut.com in September 2026; confirm current pricing before you subscribe.
Is DaVinci Resolve free?
Yes. The free version has no export watermark and caps at UHD (3840×2160), and it includes editing, Fusion VFX, colour grading and Fairlight audio. The one-time $295 Studio licence adds higher resolutions and more Neural Engine tools. For a lot of editors the free version never runs out. Prices read off blackmagicdesign.com in September 2026.
Is DaVinci Resolve better than CapCut?
It depends on the job. CapCut is the better tool for a fast, phone-shot social cut with captions and a trending sound. DaVinci Resolve is the better tool for a serious colour grade, a full audio mix or a professional finish. They barely overlap in what they are trying to do, so "better" comes down to which job you actually have.
Which is easier to learn, CapCut or DaVinci Resolve?
CapCut, clearly. It has a very low learning curve by design, built so anyone can post a social edit within minutes. DaVinci Resolve splits work across separate Cut, Edit, Fusion, Colour and Fairlight pages, which is powerful but takes real time to learn. If you want to be editing today with no manual, CapCut is the gentler start by a wide margin.
Can I edit video in a browser instead?
Yes, on Morphic. It is a multi-track editor that runs in the browser, with no install and no GPU of your own, and it can generate the footage as well as cut it: storyboard on a Canvas, generate shots across frontier video models, grade and caption on the timeline, and export up to 4K. It will not replace CapCut for a fast social cut or Resolve for a feature grade, but it does the whole job in one place.
Does CapCut have colour grading like DaVinci Resolve?
No. CapCut has basic filters and colour adjustments suited to a consistent social look, not grading. DaVinci Resolve's colour page is the industry reference, with node-based grading, professional scopes and tools colourists use on features, and it is free. If grading is the priority, Resolve is the only one of the two built for it.
